Next up in the series is Matt van Galen. He is a super talented free rider from South Africa who loves to send it any way he can😇

How old are you?
I’m 22 years old.

Where are you from?
I’m from Melkbosstrand, Cape Town, South Africa.

What got you into dirt bikes?
Initially I raced quads, because when I was really small I didn’t really like the noise of the dirt bike. Then I came round and saw all my friends racing dirt bikes and I slowly got into it and raced bikes and quads at the sam time and then ended up here somehow 😃

What bike do you ride?
I ride a Husqvarna FC 450.

Whats your favourite thing about riding dirt bikes?
My favourite thing is, even though its an individual sport is that its pretty cool how it brings all your mates together and we can all have a good time at the track and send it!

Whats your favourite track and why?
My favourite track is probably Rover in Port Elizabeth, just because it has deep sand, nice ruts and it’s something different for South Africa.

Whats your best dirt bike experience?
I don’t have one in particular but I would say every time riding with my dad in the dunes is special, there’s not many people around, you make your own tracks and its a bit of freedom on dirt bikes, having a good time.

How did you get so good at whips and scrubs, any tips?
I used to watch so many videos of the pros doing scrubs and whips when I was younger and I wanted to imitate that. I would say that repetition is key and start small and get comfortable.

Turn up whips or turn downs?
A good turn up is sick!

What other tricks are you doing?
I’m doing fender grab whips, sucide no-handers and I would love to mini flip my pit bike!

What are your goals?
At the moment I’m mostly free riding and I would like to compete in the “King of the Whip” when they have it, depending on covid. I would have to get comfortable with steel ramps. Otherwise I’m keen to get back into racing and get back into some good form and be able to do 20 minute motos without getting arm pump. Small steps first and will see where that goes.

What song do you have on repeat ?
I don’t have a specific favourite but I continuously make playlists with cringey, electronic music and alternate music.

What phrase would best describe you?

Sand tracks or Hardback track?
In South Africa we don’t really have “Hardback“ tracks. Sand is what I know and sand is what I like!

Favourite jump that you have ever hit?
There is a jump in Bloemfontein, South Africa called “Seventh Heaven” and that’s pretty sick and probably everybody that rides in South Africa knows about that jump. It’s got good pop and pretty big.

Any other hobbies?
Besides Moto, I ride bicycle and that includes enduro, downhill and dirt jump and then I wakeboard, kiteboard, surf and I try skate but fall on my face most of the time. I studied photography for a while and I’m into that too.

Whats next from here?
I think I’m going to have to quit dirt bikes and start trading crypto – Nah I’m just kidding! Dirt bikes are sick! Just keep on, keeping on 😃
